Tour overview
Samburu National Reserve and Ol Pejeta Conservancy Tour
Day 1: Nairobi – Drive to Ol Pejeta Conservancy
Today we travel to the exotic Ol Pajeta Conservancy home to a Chimpanzee sanctuary, Baraka, the Black Rhino, and two of the only remaining species of Northern White Rhino. Here, these magnificent animals are given sanctuary from those who would take their lives to sell their horns. This sumptuous ranch was once the private domain of famed multi-millionaire, Adnan Kashoggi.
Arrive in time for lunch at Sweetwaters tented camp. The camp also overlooks one of the busiest waterholes in the area and offers elephant, giraffe, and myriad plains game.
Special activities such as escorted game walks, horse-back rides, and night game drives are available here.
Overnight at Serena Sweet Waters Tented Camp.
Day 2: Ol Pejeta Conservancy
Today we enjoy an early morning game in this wonderful and beautiful conservancy where the North meets the South. This is because it straddles the Equator. You will, therefore, have a chance to see both the Big five and the Special five.
We will later travel by road to Kenya’s northern frontier. Wild and rugged, Samburu is fiercely beautiful with its arid savannahs watered by the lovely Uaso Nyiro River.
Of all the East African major savanna reserves, Samburu is renowned for its rare species of fauna known as the ‘Samburu five’. These five particular animals are usually only found north of the equator.
Samburu National Reserve was one of two regions in which Joy Adamson raised and nurtured Elsa the lioness, whose story was told in the book and movie, “Born Free”. Samburu was also home to another renowned lioness, Kamunyak (“Blessed One”) who is famous for having adopted at least 6 oryx calves between 2002 and 2003. She fought off predators to save her young orphans as seen in the film, “Heart of a Lioness”.
Day 3: Explore Samburu National Reserve
Today we start our day in the bush by scanning the river from our tent’s veranda with a cup of steaming coffee in hand. Before the dew is off the grass, we’re off in pursuit of the elephants, lions, leopards, and cheetahs that thrive in the reserve’s grasslands and acacia woodlands.
And so the day is spent in alternating pursuits of exploration in the bush and relaxation in our cozy camp/ Lodge.
Day 4: Samburu – Drive back to Nairobi
Breakfast will be served at the Camp/ Lodge, transfer by road to Nairobi.
